Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences (IPPE)
IPPE rotations are coordinated through colleges of pharmacy and typically occur during summer weeks. Students rotate through our Rock Island, Bettendorf, and Moline campuses, spending time with clinical pharmacists in a variety of settings including emergency department, intensive care unit and medical/surgical care areas. Students will interact with pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, and participate in hands-on learning activities and observation. Rotating through multiple campuses allows students to observe a variety of services provided to different patient populations including pediatrics and oncology.
Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPE)
APPE rotations are completed during the final year of pharmacy school. UnityPoint Health – Trinity partners with several colleges of pharmacy and can establish additional affiliation agreements as needed.
UnityPoint Health – Trinity offers seven APPE rotations designed to support pharmacy practice development while exposing students to multiple care settings in both core and elective categories.
Longitudinal Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (LAPPE)
LAPPE provides a longitudinal learning experience focused on health-system and community-based pharmacy practice in a specific region. UnityPoint Health – Trinity offers seven APPE rotations that fulfill several core and elective rotation requirements. This experience offers students an opportunity to become integrated into the community and network with local pharmacists and providers. We partner with fellow preceptors in the Quad Cities to offer an engaging and diverse experience.
The Quad Cities Area is considered a dynamic place to live for young adults and has been recognized for its benefits regarding cost of living, jazz, sports and arts.
Available Pharmacy Rotations
The general hospital experience allows students to participate in core pharmacy activities at our Rock Island, Bettendorf and Moline campuses. This includes all components of the medication management system, from formulary management through pharmaceutical waste. Students will observe sterile and hazardous preparation. More than half of the rotation is spent with decentralized clinical pharmacists in medical-surgical and medical oncology/neurology care areas, dosing and monitoring medication effects. Projects include drug information questions, journal club and case presentations.
UnityPoint Health – Trinity has medical and surgical ICU patients at both the Rock Island and Bettendorf campuses.
Students work up and present patients to the preceptor before multidisciplinary rounds. Students present clinical recommendations to the intensive care team during multidisciplinary rounds and complete pharmacy consults, including vancomycin, warfarin and total parenteral nutrition dosing, during the day shift.
Students will:
- Present a formal topic discussion once a week.
- Complete one journal club and one patient case presentation by the end of the rotation.
- Choose either five 8-hour shifts or four 10-hour shifts each week.
The emergency department rotation is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Culture review for discharged patients is incorporated into the rotation. Core experiences include trauma, sepsis, stroke, seizure, ACS and acid-base disorders.
Students typically perform chart reviews in the morning, prioritizing patients receiving broad-spectrum antibiotics and patients with positive sterile-site microbiology cultures. After reviewing the patient’s antimicrobials, laboratory results, cultures, imaging, physician notes and currently ordered duration of therapy, students develop plans and contact the provider or floor pharmacist with recommendations to optimize antimicrobial therapy.
In the afternoon, students follow up on pending laboratory results and notes and work on projects (MUEs, policy and protocol changes, SBARs and DI questions).
This hospital management APPE rotation provides students with exposure to the clinical, operational and administrative aspects of pharmacy leadership within a multi-hospital health system.
Students work alongside pharmacy managers and leaders, participate in departmental and interdisciplinary meetings, and gain experience in:
- Pharmacy operations
- Medication safety
- Regulatory compliance
- Formulary management
- Budgeting
- Staffing
- Quality improvement
- Strategic planning.
Responsibilities include participating in leadership discussions, completing assigned projects and data analysis, evaluating medication-use or operational processes, and developing recommendations to improve pharmacy services, patient safety and departmental efficiency
This rotation offers students experience with the operations and patient care responsibilities of a health-system-affiliated outpatient pharmacy. The pharmacy serves hospital patients at two campuses, members of the surrounding community, employees and medical staff. Services include prescription filling, medication counseling, Meds to Beds and transitions of care. Students will participate in a pharmacist-driven immunization program.
The retail pharmacy is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Student schedules vary, with start times from 8 to 9 a.m. and end times from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.
