Our volunteer program offers a tremendous variety of opportunities for service to our hospital for anyone age 14 and up. You get the satisfaction of helping others along with wonderful support from our team members. Your help is needed in areas that range from patient and family contact (such as staffing waiting rooms, escorting or instructions), to clerical such as typing and filing or working at home on scheduling appointments for SHIIP. Volunteer assignments can be arranged on a schedule that suits you, as you can choose how often you'd like to serve.

Our volunteers take pride in giving back. They’re respected members of our hospital team and their actions enhance the quality of healthcare for our patients, their families, hospital employees, visitors and the entire community. UnityPoint Health – Marshalltown is a great place to volunteer, and we thank these selfless individuals for making a difference at the hospital and in the community.
Auxiliary
For over 60 years, the Auxiliary at UnityPoint Health – Marshalltown has supported the hospital in achieving its mission and providing services to patients and their families through direct contact or through fundraising that benefits patients.
Over the years, their fundraising efforts have supported the purchase of a new ambulance, funding of the medical park (built in 2014 and expanded in 2022), free mammograms, blanket warmers and nursing school scholarships. The Auxiliary donates three $750 scholarships each year to students pursuing a degree in nursing. They also funded projects for the grounds at the old hospital and the "Tribute to Caregiver's Statue."
This group of dedicated volunteers truly believes our community needs access to quality healthcare, and their efforts have helped make this belief possible.

Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP)
SHIIP volunteers are available by appointment at UnityPoint Health – Marshalltown by calling (641) 754-5399. Please bring your insurance card(s) and a list of your current medications.
Senior Health Insurance Information Program
This service is provided by highly trained volunteers whose goal is to serve Medicare beneficiaries by assisting them to make insurance decision-making easier, provide information to compare Medicare and insurance plans, assist with enrolling in Medicare prescription drug plans and assistance programs, and understanding the bills they receive for their health care. Counselors provide one-to-one assistance in a confidential setting. These counselors are not affiliated with any insurance, financial planning or pharmaceutical industries.
SHIIP volunteers also provide free informational materials and community presentations such as "Welcome to Medicare". The volunteers, trained by the State of Iowa Insurance Division, answer questions and provide impartial information to help seniors make well-informed decisions.
SHIIP counselors help to answer questions such as:
- I'm retiring. What kind of health insurance do I need?
- I can't make sense of my Medicare statements and medical bills. What do I do next?
- Do I need a Medicare supplement policy?
- How can I help my parents with health insurance?
- There's an error on my bill and I don't know what to do.
SHIIP is available to help if you:
- Are going on Medicare
- Are age 65 or older and on Medicare
- Are on Medicare because of a disability, end stage renal disease or Lou Gehrig's disease.
Sponsor Coordinators remain in close contact with the state office each year to discuss important program changes, volunteer recruitment and management, and ways to improve their programs.
