Nursing Residency at Trinity Regional Medical Center

UnityPoint Health – Trinity Regional Medical Center is investing in new nurses by offering a Nurse Residency Program, which is designed to help new RNs successfully transition to professional practice in the hospital setting. New graduate RNs – or RNs who have less than one year of experience in the hospital setting – are automatically enrolled in the one-year program. Trinity Regional Medical Center’s nurses are recognized for their commitment to providing safe, high-quality, compassionate care for the patients and families we serve.

  • UnityPoint Health – Trinity Regional Medical Center’s Nurse Residency Program is a research-based program that offers supplemental education and support for newly hired nurse graduates during their first year of employment as an RN.
  • The purpose of the nurse residency program is to ease the transition of the new graduate nurse to student nurse to professional nurse – supporting you professionally, emotionally and socially during your first year of nursing.

Application Information

The program is offered twice per year. You will begin the residency program based on your date of hire.

Eligibility

The Nurse Residency Program is available for nurses starting their careers at Trinity Regional Medical Center. Interested individuals must apply and accept an RN position at Trinity.

Candidates for the Nurse Residency Program:

  • New graduate nurses with less than one year of clinical experience
  • Nurses re-entering the nursing profession or acute care setting
  • Must have graduated from an accredited nursing program with an Associate Degree in Nursing or a Bachelor Degree in Nursing
  • Successful completion of NCLEX and RN licensure, allowing practice in the State of Iowa

Nurses meeting the criteria will be automatically enrolled into the Nurse Residency program within six to twelve months of hire. You do not need to apply for the program.

Expectations
  • Submit an evidence-based project and present on your research at the end of the program.
  • Complete the 12-month program.
  • Demonstrate integrity, compassion, accountability, respect and excellence throughout all interactions with other personnel.
  • Classes, with an active learning format, will focus on application, analysis, synthesis and valuation of information that is directly related to your role as a front-line nurse. Learning activities will include, but are not limited to:
    • Simulation role play
    • Discussion
    • Small/large group work sessions
    • Lecture
    • Self-reflection
Objectives
  • Grow in clinical competence and the ability to be a fully functioning member of the nursing profession.
  • Develop critical thinking, organizational and time management skills. Recognize and act upon key assessment and data elements using clinical knowledge and these skills.
  • Identify patient outcomes related to nursing care and how to impact these in a positive manner.
  • Incorporate best practices as evidenced by research into nursing practice to provide high-quality care.
  • Create an individual career plan that promotes lifelong learning.
  • Utilize communication techniques with patients, families and the health care team.
Methodologies
  • A variety of clinical education and health care experts from Trinity will present topics relevant to the Nurse Residency goals and objectives. Each class has a combination of learning styles including hands-on training and simulation.
  • Reflective learning is encouraged among nursing professionals and is an important aspect of professional growth and development in nursing. Residents will complete reflective learning for each session, describing how the concepts presented can be applied to their individual practice.
  • Courses cover clinical topics – chest tube management, ethics, wound care, cardiac diseases, code blue response – and professional topics – use of social media, culturally sensitive care, time management, communicating with physicians, Board of Nursing requirements, leadership and empathy.
  • Personal topics will also be covered, such as stress management, shift work, self-care and debriefing.
Outcome
The Nurse Residency graduate will transition into professional practice delivering confident, safe and comprehensive patient care based on critical thinking and socialization into the health care team as a fully functioning member.
