Purpose & Intended Audience

To provide physicians, nurses, paramedics and respiratory therapists current concepts of advanced pediatric life support as defined by the American Heart Association.


Provide proof of current American Heart Association (AHA) PALS Provider status.

Willingness to teach a minimum of 4 courses in a 2 year period.

Part 1:  PALS Instructor Essentials

  • Complete all prerequisites, registration form, instructor candidate form, alignment form, and submit them with a current PALS Provider card and fax to Terry Neal at 515-241-6732.  After receipt of information, the participant will receive the access to the online PALS Instructor Essentials Course to complete.
  • Participants complete the online program at their own pace (approx. 3.5 hours).  The participant will print the certificate at the end of the program as proof of completion.
  • Upon completion of Part 1, fax the PALS Instructor Essentials Certificate to Terry Neal at 515-241-6732. This is to be completed at least 2 weeks prior to the course date.
  • At the completion of the PALS Instructor Course, participants will be scheduled to teach in a course at the UnityPoint Health - Des Moines Training Center to be monitored by Training Center Faculty.  This must be done before instructors can teach independently.
  • Monitoring is usually completed within 90 days, but must be completed within 6 months.
  • An additional charge for monitoring will be based on location:

    * $100 at a UnityPoint Health - Des Moines course

    * $200 + mileage for any site other than UnityPoint Health - Des Moines

Part 2:  PALS Instructor Course


$250.00. The registration fee includes instructor manual, nursing contact hours and American Heart Association card. Lunch is on your own.

Course Objectives

At the completion of this program, the participant should be able to:

  1. Describe the core competencies of an AHA instructor.
  2. Identify resources available to an AHA instructor.
  3. Describe how to use discipline-specific AHA instructor materials.
  4. Demonstrate effective feedback and remediation techniques.  

Continuing Education Credits

The American Heart Association will issue a card verifying the successful completion of the PALS course. Expiration of the verification will occur two years from the date of issue.

Refund Policy

Blank Children's Hospital reserves the right to cancel the program due to insufficient enrollment or inclement weather. In this event, you will be notified and your entire registration fee refunded.

Cancellation Policy

A processing fee of $30 plus the cost of the manual will be retained for cancellations less than 5 business days prior to the course.
