Purpose

To provide certification in ACLS by the American Heart Association with an added component specific to the obstetric patient.

Intended Audience

The ACLS for OB New Provider Course is designed for registered nurses, nurse midwives, and physicians who care for pregnant and postpartum women.

Prerequisites

Prior to class, you must pass the Pre-course Self-Assessment with a minimum score of 70%. Go to www.eLearning.heart.org/course/423 to access the required Pre-Course Assessment. Please print your score and send an email copy to melanie.hermann@unitypoint.org at least one week prior to your scheduled class.

If not received one week prior, you will be dropped from the class and billed a $25 administrative fee.

It is essential that you bring an American Heart Association ACLS Provider Manual to class.

Objectives

On completion of this course, the participant should be able to:

  1. Apply the BLS, Primary, and Secondary Assessments sequence for a systematic evaluation of adult patients.
  2. Perform prompt, high-quality BLS, including prioritizing early chest compressions and integrating early automated external defibrillator (AED) use.
  3. Recognize respiratory arrest.
  4. Perform early management of respiratory arrest.
  5. Discuss early recognition and management of ACS, including appropriate disposition.
  6. Discuss early recognition and management of stroke, including appropriate disposition.
  7. Recognize bradyarrhythmias and tachyarrhythmias that may result in cardiac arrest or complicate resuscitation outcome.
  8. Perform early management of bradyarrhythmias and tachyarrhythmias that may result in cardiac arrest or complicate resuscitation outcome.
  9. Recognize cardiac arrest.
  10. Perform early management of cardiac arrest until termination of resuscitation or transfer of care, including immediate post-cardiac arrest care.
  11. Model effective communication as a member or leader of a high-performance team.
  12. Evaluate resuscitative efforts during a cardiac arrest through continuous assessment of CPR quality, monitoring the patient's physiologic response, and delivering real-time feedback to the team.
  13. Recognize the impact of team dynamics on overall team performance.
  14. Discuss how the use of a rapid response team or medical emergency team may improve patient outcomes.
  15. Define systems of care.
  16. Discuss the application of ACLS to the obstetric patient and identify considerations necessary for this population
  17. Identify physiological differences in the obstetric patient

Simulation Lab – park in the ramp and take SE elevators to Level 2

Cost/Class Materials

$200 – includes ACLS with an Obstetric focus booklet

Registrants are responsible for accessing an AHA ACLS Provider manual and bring to class.

Continuing Education Credits

This program has been approved for 11.5 contact hours by the Iowa Board of Nursing Provider #31, UnityPoint Health – Des Moines. No partial credit will be awarded.

The American Heart Association will issue a card verifying the successful completion of the course. Expiration of the verification will occur two years from the date of issue.

Refund Policy

Blank Children’s Hospital reserves the right to cancel the program due to insufficient enrollment or inclement weather. In this event, you will be notified and your entire registration fee refunded.

Cancellation Policy

Due to the high demand for this course, a processing fee of $30 will be retained for cancellations less than 5 business days prior to the course. Please email Melanie.hermann@unitypoint.org to cancel.
