Q: Why are you billing me when worker's compensation should have paid for my care?
A: Meriter Laboratories will submit claims to worker's compensation and liability carriers if you provide us with complete and accurate billing information. However, submission of a claim does not guarantee payment from any insurance provider. We will bill you for balances not paid by worker's compensation or your insurance provider.
Q: I just got a letter from you saying it's been 45 days since you billed my insurance and you haven't heard from them yet. Did you bill my insurance?
A: We will bill your insurance provider if you give us the necessary information. This includes:
- The name and address of your insurance provider
- The name of the insured person
- The policy and group numbers
If you have more than one insurance provider, we must receive information on each health insurance plan that covers you. Please note that if you do not provide all required information upon admission, you may be responsible for the entire balance. If your insurance provider does not pay your claim, we may ask you to become involved as it can speed up the processing of your claim. We will bill you for balances not paid by your insurance provider.
Q: Why am I being billed when I gave my insurance information to the person that served me?
A: There are two possible reasons. First, you may be getting a bill for the balances not paid by your insurance provider. The amount you're being billed may be your deductible, your copay and/or charges not covered by your insurance. We are notified of your deductibles and copays after we submit your claim to your insurance provider.
Secondly, there is the possibility that your information was not entered into our system correctly. If you receive a bill and we have not billed your insurance provider yet, please contact us at (608) 417-3870.
Q: I got my Explanation of Benefits from my insurance company last week saying they paid my bill. Today, I received a bill from Meriter Laboratories that doesn't reflect my insurance company's payment. Why?
A: Generally, the reason you receive our bill after your insurance provider has paid the balance is because the payment and the bill crossed in the mail. Also, an insurance provider may mark a claim as "paid" in their records when they still need to print out the check and mail it. It also takes us a day or two to process each payment.

Q: I had some skin biopsied and now am receiving a bill from Meriter Laboratories and WI Pathologists. Am I being double billed?
A: No, you are not being double billed. Meriter Laboratories performs the technical preparation of the specimen so that a Pathologist may then look at the sample and determine the diagnosis or state of the specimen. Meriter Laboratories will bill for the technical preparation and WI Pathologist will bill the Pathologist fee for reviewing the specimen. This practice is in accordance with guidelines approved by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS).
