With a long and successful history of working together to delivery superior care, we are excited to enhance our working relationship to further benefit our patients and their families, the Madison community and the broader region we serve.
Here's a look at some of our collaborations to date:
Nearly 50 years ago, the University of Wisconsin Department of Obstetrics Clinical Program and Residency Training moved to what was then Madison General Hospital (now UnityPoint Health - Meriter). As a result, UW Health never needed to build its own, separate labor and delivery unity, due to the relationship with Meriter for delivering babies in our region.
Likewise, for decades now, our organizations have maintained multiple long-term arrangements for other UW Health residency programs and for some UW Health specialty services.
Beginning in 1998, Meriter and UW Health developed various joint ventures designed to expand patients' access to high-quality preventive and specialty care, resulting in the Madison Surgery Center, Wisconsin Dialysis, Transformations Surgery Center, Wisconsin Sleep and Generations Fertility Care.
Most recently, Meriter and UW Health launched a shared Mother-Baby Care program to provide coordinated perinatal, obstetric and neonatal services. It combines the strengths of academic medicine with the patient- and family-centered care of a community hospital, showing the benefits of a unified approach to care.
We look forward to the benefits of enhanced alignment, which will allow us to utilize our collective resources to the fullest and work together further to benefit the communities we serve.
Our Health Plans
Physicians Plus Insurance Corp., Unity Health Plans Insurance Corp. and Gundersen Health Plan share a similar heritage as insurers formed by health care delivery systems to further enhance and coordinate the care received by our patients.
Unity traces its roots to 1983, when HMO of Wisconsin Insurance Corp. was formed as one of the nation's first rural-based Health Maintenance Organizations. Unity was formed in 1994 when HMO of Wisconsin Insurance Corp. and U-Care HMO, Inc., combined. Unity had been recognized for years as one of the nation's top 50 health plans for HMO and Point of Service (POS) products, according to the National Committee for Quality Assurance's (NCQA) Private Health Insurance Rankings.
Physicians Plus was founded in 1986 and has grown into a nationally recognized managed care organization focused on providing high-quality, innovative products and services that help improve the health of our members and the community. Physicians Plus maintains Commendable Accreditation Status from the NCQA in recognition of meeting rigorous standards for consumer protection and quality improvement in the delivery of our health plan services.
Gundersen Health Plan
Gundersen Health Plan was founded in 1995 and quickly grew to provide benefit plans for other businesses in the LaCrosse region, serving portions of Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa. Gundersen Health Plan products routinely score in the 90th percentile on the NCQA's Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS), a voluntary reporting system that nearly 90 percent of health plans in the U.S. participate in.
Both Physicians Plus and Unity have been recognized as among America's healthiest companies by the Wellness Council of America, with each earning multiple Well Workplace Gold Awards.
