Carsten & Bo
When you meet Carsten (9) and Bo (7) Christofferson, you can't help but smile. Both boys have Down syndrome, and their loving personalities are infectious: Carsten - passionate, determined and wise; Bo - brave, friendly and clever. Megan, Carsten and Bo's mom, describes them as peas and carrots.
"Carsten is our biological son, and after he was born, he changed everything for us," Megan said. "He inspired us to open our hearts to adopt Bo from China in July 2014. When we first saw Bo's pictures, we fell instantly in love. He has been such a blessing and wonderful addition to our family."
Carsten and Bo see their pediatrician, Dr. Lisa Menzies, routinely and also receive speech therapy and occupational therapy. Their approach to each day is to take everything as it comes, doing what they need to do with their own style and flare and on their timeline. But, no matter how many hours they may spend in doctors' offices, Megan says she can always count on hugs and kisses on the way to the car.
"They surprise us every day with what they can do," Megan said. "The sky is truly the limit for Carsten and Bo."
That's exactly the attitude both boys have, too. Carsten loves sports, particularly baseball, and plans to attend Iowa State University to be a scientist. Bo loves Toy Story, especially Woody, and he can't wait to grow up and be a cowboy.
"Even if I spent every moment of every day trying to pay back Carsten and Bo for the lessons they have taught me, it would never be enough," said Megan. "How do you possibly thank someone enough for opening your eyes to the beauty of everything and softening your heart towards everyone? It's impossible."
