Advanced Technology

da Vinci® Surgical System

Our pediatric surgeons have been pioneering minimally-invasive surgery technology. One of their techniques involves the da Vinci® Surgical System. This robotic surgery system allows our surgeons to offer minimally-invasive surgery option for infants, children and adolescents. When this type of technology is used, children recover faster and have less pain. Our da Vinci® system was the first in Iowa to upgrade to the da Vinci® Surgical System Si, allowing for single incision surgeries. Blank Children's Hospital was the first in Iowa to perform a minimally-invasive single incision appendectomy and cholecystectomy on patients using this new surgery technology.

Pediatric Level II Trauma Care in Central Iowa

Whether it's a broken arm, stitches or a life threatening injury, the Blank Children's Hospital Emergency Department is ready to respond. We are a certified Level II Pediatric Trauma Center. Our highly experienced staff and state-of-the-art technology ensures every child is in good hands.

Neonatal & Pediatric Critical Care Ambulance

In late 2008, Blank Children's Hospital launched its new Neonatal & Pediatric Critical Care Ambulance. In 2014,  the chassis was replaced and the ambulance got a new paint job and design. This ambulance is basically a critical care unit on wheels, and is the only one-of-its-kind in the region. It allows for our specialized Neonatal Transport Team and Pediatric Transport Team to bring critical care to infants, children and adolescents across the state. The ambulance offers enough space to transport more than one patient and family members. In emergency situations, the ambulance can operate independently of the engine with a generator for more than 24 hours. The ambulance was made possible by community support and through a leadership gift from Variety - The Children's Charity.

State-of-the-Art Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

When renovated in 2001, the Blank Children's Hospital NICU was one of the first in the world to offer private-room care. Since that time, hospital leaders from across the world have modeled their care around our design. Along with the private-room care, our unit offers infants the latest in technology. From highly advanced beds and bilirubin lights to total body cooling and vapotherm, our NICU is leading the way in technology for newborns.
