Patient Testimonial

After undergoing quadruple bypass, Brian Carmichael feels healthier than he has in years.

At 67 years of age, Brian Carmichael feels like he’s 50 again - and he credits that transformation to the exceptional care he received across UnityPoint Health.

Brian's journey began with a long struggle with type 2 diabetes. That changed when he connected with the UnityPoint Health – Trinity Diabetes Center, where he finally got the answers he had been seeking for years.

Just as things were improving, a fall and persistent chest pain led Brian to his local provider, Paulette Gleason, ARNP, UnityPoint Clinic Family Medicine – Manson. She encouraged him to follow up with cardiology at UnityPoint Health – Trinity Heart Center in Fort Dodge.

Brian had a telemedicine visit with Dmitry Gorelik, MD, Cardiologist at Trinity Heart Center. Though skeptical about telemedicine at first, Brian was quickly reassured.

“It felt like he was right there,” Brian says. “I want people to know it’s okay to see your doctor on a screen.”

An angiogram with Joseph Cookman, DO, FACC, Interventional Cardiologist at Trinity Heart Center, revealed a blockage near Brian's aorta, confirming the need for open-heart surgery. Just days later, he underwent a quadruple bypass with Bhavik Patel, MD, Cardiothoracic Surgeon at UnityPoint Health – Allen Hospital.

“It was like watching a symphony,” Brian recalls. “Everyone knew their role and made me feel safe.”

Recovery was quick and within days Brian was walking laps and feeling stronger than he had in years. Follow-up care with Dr. Gorelik helped him transition into cardiac rehab at UnityPoint Health – Trinity Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation, where he continued to thrive.

From Manson to Fort Dodge to Waterloo, Brian is deeply thankful for everyone who helped him reclaim his health.

“I just want to thank everybody for saving my life,” says Brian. “It’s as simple as that.”
