What is Cancer Rehab?
At UnityPoint Health – Finley Hospital, we provide oncology rehabilitation services to individuals with cancer and cancer survivors. Our goal through oncology rehab is to reduce the symptom burden, maximize independence and improve quality of life for patients throughout treatment and survivorship. Our cancer rehab services include physical, occupational and speech therapy to help patients improve strength, maintain and restore function and regain control of their lives.
Individualized Cancer Therapy
Our oncology rehabilitation program provides individualized care to all cancer patients and survivors who want to improve their daily function and quality of life. Our oncology rehabilitation therapist works with patients to address rehabilitation needs for a variety of different cancer-related conditions including:
• Restricted range of motion
• Joint stiffness
• Cancer-related fatigue
• Decline in balance
• Pelvic floor dysfunction
• Difficulty walking
• Chemo-induced peripheral neuropathy (numbness/tingling)
• Scar restrictions/fibrosis
• Neck and jaw mobility
• Difficulty with daily tasks and mobility (endurance)
• Other areas related to a cancer diagnosis
Our oncology rehab program at UnityPoint Health – Finley Hospital allows patients to begin therapy at any point in their cancer journey. After receiving a cancer diagnosis, you can be referred to our therapist for prehab/intervention. This first step can improve the functional tolerance towards surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. Rehab focuses on functional recovery and often takes place during and after treatment.
Our Certified Oncology Rehabilitation Therapists
The Wendt Regional Cancer Center team and our certified oncology rehabilitation therapists are here for you every step of the way during your cancer journey – from diagnosis to survivorship. Our certified oncology rehabilitation therapists help manage the conditions patients experience, as a result of a cancer diagnosis and cancer treatment.
Our certified oncology rehabilitation therapists have been certified by the Physiological Oncology Rehabilitation Institute (PORi).
Kimberly Lamey was the first PORi-certified therapist in the state of Iowa who specializes in chemotoxicity and exercise and is uniquely qualified to treat a variety of conditions related to cancer during any phase of diagnosis and treatment. In addition, Amanda Coakley, Melissa Westhoff and Sara Hahn, all UnityPoint Health - Dubuque therapists, have also specialized in chemotoxicity and exercise.
