President and Chief Executive Officer
Clay Holderman, MBA was named President and CEO of UnityPoint Health in February 2021. He previously held the role of Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at Presbyterian Healthcare Services, a $4.8 billion integrated payor-provider health system in New Mexico, where he oversaw all care delivery operations, information technology, real estate and development, payor-provider integration and new ventures. Holderman has held executive leadership roles in both investor-owned and not-for-profit health systems, including multiple Hospital Chief Executive Officer roles for LifePoint Hospitals and Ardent Health.
At Presbyterian, Holderman oversaw nine hospitals, an 1,100-member statewide multispecialty practice, three ambulance companies and several large home health agencies. He led the development of two de-novo hospitals and was instrumental in driving growth for the system from $2.2 billion to $4.8 billion in net revenue. He led significant initiatives in clinical service line implementation, labor and supply chain cost management, ambulatory site of service shift to lower total cost of care and a portfolio of new business development and acquisitions. Holderman also contributed to work addressing social determinants of health in order to reduce disparities in health outcomes and the cost of care for New Mexico's most vulnerable populations.
During the SARS-CoV2 pandemic, Holderman served the State of New Mexico as the Health System Advisor, organizing the state's competing hospitals into a hub and spoke model with a single transfer center for all critical care admissions statewide. He served as Presbyterian's Area Commander for the pandemic throughout 2020, including recovery of operations to near pre-pandemic levels by August 2020. Holderman is most proud of the move the leadership team initiated to elevate workforce wellbeing to a board-level strategic initiative, lifting provider satisfaction from the bottom decile to national median and workforce engagement from the 26th to 67th percentile in four years.
John Sheehan, FACHE
Chief Operating Officer, Senior Vice President
Sheehan serves as Chief Operating Officer, Senior Vice President with responsibility for systemwide hospital and clinic operations. Prior to this role, he was appointed as Chief Administrative Officer and oversaw all functional areas of our system services departments. Sheehan also served as an incident commander for the COVID-19 pandemic in liaison with the Iowa Governor's Office and continues to provide counsel to the system related to emergency preparedness. Sheehan has significant experience in hospital and group practice leadership spanning the full range of operations in a variety of systems and markets, and he is recognized for his team building expertise to strengthen organizational culture and performance in all areas within forward thinking systems.
Sheehan joined the organization as Vice President, Operations in April 2019 and was quickly assigned as President and CEO of the Quad Cities/Muscatine region on an interim basis for six months. In addition, he worked with all regions on system initiatives such as campus optimization, rural health, and service line development.
Previously, Sheehan was President of UW Health at the American Center Hospital & Clinics and a Senior Vice President with UW Health in Madison, Wisconsin. Key accomplishments included the development and implementation of two new hospitals as well as UW Health's joint operating agreement with UnityPoint Health – Meriter. He also maintained service line responsibility for major clinical programs across UW Health.
Prior to joining UW Health, Sheehan was the number two executive at UnityPoint Health – Cedar Rapids for 11 years and the only administrator across the system with a dual appointment in both hospital and clinic operations. He has also held C-suite positions at ThedaCare, Geisinger and Centura Health.
Sheehan received his master's degree in health administration from St. Louis University and his bachelor of science degree in economics from the University of Wisconsin. He is a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives and received the ACHE Distinguished Service Award in 2016. Sheehan has been active in community service organizations and hospital association work throughout his career. He is currently a member of the Rotary Club of Des Moines, IA and the Iowa Hospital Association Council on Health Information.
David M. Williams, M.D.
Chief Clinical Officer, Senior Vice President
Dr. Williams serves as Chief Clinical Officer, Senior Vice President. Previously, he served as President and Chief Executive Officer for UnityPoint Clinic and UnityPoint at Home, which together serve as the ambulatory division of UnityPoint Health.
Dr. Williams is residency trained and board certified in pediatrics and has more than 20 years of clinical experience. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree from Creighton University in Omaha, NE, and completed his pediatric residency at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, OR. He is a member of the American Association for Physician Leadership, a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and a licensed physician and surgeon in the state of Iowa. Dr. Williams is also a graduate of the UnityPoint Health Physician Leadership Academy, the American College of Physician Executives, Physician Leadership Development Program and a Certified Physician Executive. In 2017, he completed his Master of Medical Management program at Carnegie Mellon University.
Mary Ann Osborn
Chief Nursing Executive, Senior Vice President
Osborn, Mary Ann, serves as Chief Nursing Executive, Senior Vice President. She joined UnityPoint Health as Vice President of Care Transformation in December 2015, where she was responsible for the deployment of population health and other related care transformation strategies across all sites of care. She led, directed and fully deployed core competencies that fundamentally transformed the models of care to support the individualized needs of customers, patients and families.
Previously, Osborn served as Senior Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer at UnityPoint Health – Cedar Rapids and held roles in administration for St. Luke's Hospital since 2002. During her tenure there, she was passionate about the integration of clinical practice and performance improvement and led large-scale change, such as an electronic medical record conversion. Osborn's professional achievements include leading St. Luke's Hospital to Magnet Designation (2009), Magnet Redesignation (2013) and contributing to the Iowa Recognition for Performance Excellence Gold Award (2010). She received her BSN from Mt. Mercy University and her master's degree in nursing at the University of Iowa, with an emphasis on executive leadership.
Chief Information Officer, Senior Vice President
Smith serves as Chief Information Officer, Senior Vice President. She held the role of Vice President, Chief Information Officer from 2016 to early 2021, where she was responsible for a centralized Information Technology Department across the entire system. She is passionate about creating an environment where team members can do their best work and providing business process-enabling technology solutions to the customers she serves.

She holds a bachelor's degree in management information systems from Iowa State University and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Iowa. Smith is also a member of the Health Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS) and the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME). Additionally, she serves on the board of the Technology Association of Iowa.
Smith has been recognized in Becker's CIOs to Know, Becker's Women CIOs to Know, Health Data Management's Most Powerful Women in Healthcare IT and was named CIO of the Year in 2018 by the Technology Association of Iowa.
Interim Chief Legal Officer, Senior Vice President
King serves as Interim Chief Legal Officer and General Counsel, where she advises executive leadership and the UnityPoint Health Board of Directors on all governance, legal and risk matters, as well as coordinates the legal work to support the health system's 21 hospitals, extensive clinic network, home health agency, and system services' operations.
Prior to this role, King held various roles with UnityPoint Health for 19 years including serving as Deputy General Counsel (2013-2020), Associate Counsel (1999-2011) and System Privacy Officer (2002-2011). Core responsibilities as Deputy General Counsel included the above, plus direct supervision of organizational attorneys, serving as legal counsel to the UnityPoint Clinic Board of Directors and Physician Governance Council and providing advice in the areas of physician relations, bond financing, accountable care organization, payor innovation strategies, and other healthcare operational areas. King served as Counsel for Catholic Health Initiatives in Des Moines, Iowa from 2011-2013 and worked in private practice from 1995-1999.
King received a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Finance with high distinction from the University of Iowa College of Business, and her Juris Doctor degree with high distinction from the University of Iowa College of Law.
Interim Chief Human Resources Officer, Senior Vice President
Evans serves as interim Chief Human Resources Officer, Senior Vice President, where she leads the talent management and diversity, equity and inclusion strategy for the organization. Prior to this role, she served as Executive Director of Talent Management and Diversity with a focus on strategies to attract, acquire, deveBefore joining UnityPoint Health in 2019, Evans spent 17 years at Wells Fargo, where she served as Senior Vice President of Enterprise Talent Planning and Vice President of Talent Planning and Development. During her tenure, she led companywide succession planning, talent pipeline strategy and learning and development programs, as well as provided strategic support for diversity and inclusion, performance management, merger acquisition and engagement.
Evans holds a bachelor's degree in political science from Northwest Missouri State University. She received her Master of Education (M Ed) degree in Education and Human Resource Studies from Colorado State University.
Senior Vice President, Planning and Interim Chief Financial Officer
Carpenter serves as Senior Vice President of Planning and interim Chief Financial Officer. Previously, he served as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer from 2017 to early 2021.
Carpenter has also held the positions of Regional Chief Financial Officer and Chief Strategy Officer for UnityPoint Health – Waterloo and Dubuque. All told, he's been with the health system for more than 26 years in numerous roles.
Carpenter has a bachelor's degree from the University of Iowa and a master's degree from St. Ambrose University. His professional memberships include the Healthcare Finance Management Association.
Vice President, Brand, Marketing and Communications
McKinney serves as Vice President of Brand, Marketing and Communications, where she is responsible for UnityPoint Health's enterprise-wide brand and communication strategy. She provides lead counsel for C-Suite executive communication and issues management, as well as oversees editorial communications strategy, creative services and system-wide brand and service line marketing efforts for nine regions across a 3-state footprint. Prior to this role, she spent the past five years as Executive Director, Brand Management and Communications, where she built a multi-faceted team to align and infuse the organization's brand identity, tone and positioning across all markets.
Before joining UnityPoint Health, she spent over a decade as a marketing leader for Target Corporation, where she led the development of an in-house strategic partnership division and managed a team responsible for experiential marketing and publicity, including support of Target's legacy corporate partnership with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. McKinney also owned a full-service brand and communications agency with clients in healthcare, retail, sports/entertainment and law.
McKinney has a bachelor's degree in Journalism and Mass Communications from the University of Iowa.
