Brief Action Planning and Motivational Interviewing: Changing Behavior One Goal at a Time

This webinar addresses sensitive topics, such as overweight or obesity, can be difficult even in the health care setting.  Motivational Interviewing is a way of communication that advocates for behavior change without using coercion or pressure. MI advocates for patient change in a non-judgmental manner that builds a person's own motivation for change. When first presented with the tenants and skills of MI, many health care professionals may think that they don't have time to use this tool in a clinic visit. Brief Action Planning is the tool that will enable to a provider or other health care worker to utilize the proponents of MI in a 15-minute visit. This webinar describes both MI and BAP and the difference in clinic visit outcomes between using them and not using them.  MI and BAP skills and the flow of a visit are described along with traps to avoid that many of us may fall into.

We will learn ways to integrate sensitivity into our interactions including our language, how we weigh and measure youth, and even the physical clinic environment. Additionally, we will learn about the messages we see in the media and look at guidelines for the language and images we can use when talking about this sensitive topic in a public setting.his webinar will review basic information regarding orthopedic injuries and the determination of emergent, urgent or non-urgent status within the elementary, middle and high school setting.
