Littlest Angels Program
In 1991, the Littlest Angels fund was established with gifts from a number of forward-thinking donors including American Family Insurance, Attic Angel Association, the Evjue Foundation and the Friends of Meriter.
Today, the program provides financial support for a growing number of families in the Birthing Center, Newborn Intensive Care Unit and Center for Perinatal Care. Each year, more than 500 families received assistance based on their need. The fund offers free or reduced cost infant car seats to safely transport newborns home, emergency funds for cab vouchers to and from medical appointments, assistance with pharmacy charges, breast pumps, meal tickets and lodging assistance. Educational binders are also made available to families with premature or ill infants outlining the special care needs of their newborn.
Gifts to the Littlest Angels fund impact families right here in our community, and even small gifts make a difference and offer one less thing for new parents to worry about. At Meriter, we are making sure that each and every infant has the best start possible.
According to the March of Dimes, about one in nine babies is born prematurely. To help parents during and after this challenging experience, Meriter Hospital offers the SPIN (Supporting Parents In the NICU) support group. SPIN meets once a week and serves as a forum for parents to share their stories, seek advice and other tips when caring for a baby born too soon.
"When you're in a situation like this, when you're in the NICU, it helps to talk to someone who's been there, who knows what it's like to see their baby in an incubator as opposed to a normal crib at home," says Becky Goplin, a mother in the support group. Her son was born at 32 weeks.
The SPIN group is open to parents with infants who are currently or formerly patients in the NICU.
