Trinity Heart Center and Emergency Department
On April 19, 2015, UnityPoint Health - Trinity opened a 90,000 square-foot, three-story expansion of its Heart Center and Emergency department (ED) at the Trinity Rock Island campus. The $61.3 million construction project - which is located at the front of the hospital - is the largest in the facility's history. The expansion is designed to improve patient safety and privacy, better coordinate care, reduce operational costs and accommodate increased demand. The space includes:
State-of-the-Art Emergency Department (ED):
- Specially secured front triage area
- 22 general treatment stations, 3 built to safe room standards
- Short-stay observation unit with 12 beds
- Dedicated trauma room
- General radiology room
- CT room
- Private elevator
Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU):
The Crisis Stabilization Unit assists in the staff's ability to quickly consult and treat a diverse set of patients entering the ED with:
- Six psych patient safe rooms
- Interview rooms
- "Living room" area designed to be a calming, separate space with wood millwork, comfortable seating, artwork, a dining room table and a fish tank. The calming setting is intended to help de-escalate behavioral health patients in crisis.
- Nearby access to RYC inpatient unit
In addition to the setting, process changes were implemented creating a new model of care called Trauma-Informed Care. The care model - which was studied by the architect at a national level - also calls for the use of peer mentors who are certified by the National Alliance on Mental Illness and nurses and social workers specially trained on behavioral health care-giving.
Cutting-Edge Comprehensive Heart Center:
- Four catheterization labs with one dedicated to electrophysiology cases
- 20 cardiac treatment beds
- Six non-invasive diagnostic treatment rooms (NIDT)
- 26 cardiac rehab stations, which brings our heart care under one roof
- Floor dedicated to follow-up education, staffed by dietitians and exercise specialists
- Space to coordinate on-site care with mental health professionals
