Iowa Lutheran Hospital

Iowa Lutheran Hospital exists because of a promise to the community. In the winter of 1908, an accident victim died when a train passing through Des Moines fatally delayed his horse-drawn ambulance trip to a west-side hospital. Concerned friends acted to create a hospital. They promised to provide caring health care to their families, friends and community.

Today, Iowa Lutheran Hospital is still providing that same promise to the community. Iowa Lutheran promises to care for the health care needs of families, friends and neighbors and to uphold the tradition of excellence while delivering family centered care. ILH promises to "be there" for the community.

Philanthropic dollars help Iowa Lutheran Hospital to continue the tradition of excellence. Your gift will assist us with many of our patient and family needs. Please help us to fulfill our promise to our community.

Donors Making a Difference

Capital Improvements - Contributions help fund facility improvement projects that match the high level of skilled, compassionate, quality care provided by dedicated physicians and staff.

Behavioral Health Services - Iowa Lutheran Hospital treats the largest number of emergency visit psychiatric patients in Central Iowa. Seventy total inpatient hospital beds (30 for children/adolescent patients and 40 for adult patients) serve troubled patients and their families. Many of the patients in our children's programs are affected by significant psychiatric and behavioral problems, sometimes complicated by drug use. Any contributions to the behavioral health area will help to dramatically impact the lives of patients and their family members.

Powell Chemical Dependency - Chemical dependency is a treatable illness. Treatment and recovery can begin at Powell. Since UnityPoint Health opened its treatment unit in 1973, Powell has served over 14,000 patients and 35,000 family members. Contributions help us to provide additional patient services needed.

Patient Programs and Services - Iowa Lutheran Hospital strives to continually expand and improve the quality and the variety of healthcare programs and services offered to our patients. Contributions in this area will enable us to better serve general patient needs ranging from prenatal classes to adult patient teaching materials.

Emergency Services - The Emergency Department at Iowa Lutheran Hospital is treating more patients than ever before in its history. Patient volume has steadily climbed and has outgrown the size of the present structure. Better accessibility, more patient privacy and increased family comfort are addressed in the new facility opened in April of 2002. Additional dollars will assist in completing this project as originally designed.
