Hospital Elder Life Program (HELP)
An elderly man suffers a heart attack and while receiving care, he becomes confused and upset.
HELP is there with an extra volunteer to help reduce delirium in older patients. Volunteers keep him aware of his surroundings, assist with eating and drinking, and encourage him to move around, which reduces the stress and confusion of being in a strange place.
Elderly patients fare much better when cared for by nursing and volunteer staff that are knowledgeable in the specific physiological and cognitive needs of older adults. The Meriter Hospital Elder Life Program recognizes the unique challenges that many older patients face.
"Thank goodness for HELP! With the volunteers, my husband was much improved from his last hospital stay, where he went into acute delirium."
