Weeks 21-24

Baby's Growth & Development

  • head, body, arms and legs are balanced in size
  • toenails, eyebrows and hair are starting to grow
  • teeth are forming under the gums
  • you feel the baby moving, but you could mistake it for gas bubbles
  • the baby is able to kick and turn over
  • your movement gently rocks the baby in the fluid filled (amniotic) sack
  • you can tell when the baby sleeps and moves
  • the baby reacts to sound
  • there is chance the baby may live outside the womb at 23-24 weeks
  • the baby will weigh between 8 ounces and 1 pound, and is 8 to 12 inches long (fits in the palm of your hand)


  • increase in size and become more firm and tender
  • the brownish area around the nipple (areola) becomes darker and you can see small bumps
  • wear a supportive bra to ease the strain on your back
  • breasts need no special care while pregnant
  • nipple stimulation can cause uterine contractions and, at times lead to not normal contractions

Warning Signs

Call the office right away if you have any of these signs:

  • sudden bad or lasting headache, spots in front of your eyes or blurred eyesight
  • bad stomach pain or cramping
  • throwing up or loose stools that do not get better
  • bad pain in the shoulder without a reason
  • high fever ( above 101°F)
  • swelling in your face, hands, or arms
  • sudden weight gain in just a few days
  • vaginal bleeding (a small amount of spotting after sex or pelvic exam is normal)
  • gush or flow of fluid from your vagina that soaks a pad
  • regular painful contractions, that get stronger as time passes
