About Sahith Reddy Thotamgari, MD

Biography

I am a general invasive cardiologist dedicated to providing compassionate, evidence-based, patient-centered cardiovascular care, with particular expertise in preventive cardiology, cardio-oncology and cardiac imaging. I am passionate about helping patients understand and reduce their cardiovascular risk, managing complex heart conditions and supporting patients with cancer who may experience cardiovascular effects from their treatment. My goal is to build lasting relationships with patients and their families while combining clinical excellence, prevention and research to improve heart health and overall quality of life.

Why did you decide to join UnityPoint Health? I decided to join UnityPoint Health because of its strong commitment to providing high-quality, patient-centered care within the community. I was particularly drawn to the opportunity to work with a multidisciplinary team and provide comprehensive cardiovascular care close to home for patients. I also value an environment that supports collaboration, continued learning and improving the health of the communities we serve.

Describe your typical patient: I see a broad range of adults with cardiovascular concerns, including patients with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, coronary artery disease, heart failure, arrhythmias, abnormal cardiac testing and other heart-related symptoms. I also see patients who may not have established heart disease but have cardiovascular risk factors and want to take a proactive approach to prevent future problems. Every patient is different, and I try to tailor the evaluation and treatment plan to their individual needs and goals.

What would your patients say about you? My patients would describe me as approachable, attentive and thorough. I believe one of the most important parts of being a physician is making sure patients feel heard and understand what is happening with their health. I try to explain medical information in a way that is easy to understand and involve patients in decisions about their care. My goal is for patients to leave an appointment feeling their concerns were addressed and they have a clear plan moving forward.

What is the most important thing to know about you? I believe cardiovascular care is a partnership. I focus on understanding each patient’s needs, creating a personalized plan and emphasizing prevention and early intervention to support long-term heart health.

How would you describe the ideal patient/provider relationship? The ideal relationship is built on trust, communication and shared decision-making. Patients should feel comfortable asking questions and expressing their concerns, while providers should listen carefully and make sure patients understand their options. I want my patients to feel we are working together toward the same goal, which is helping them live a longer, healthier and more fulfilling life.

What is most important for patients to know about your medical philosophy? I believe good medicine combines clinical expertise with compassion. I strive to stay current in cardiology while providing personalized care and maintaining clear communication with patients and the entire care team.

What do you like to do in your free time? Outside of medicine, I enjoy traveling, exploring new places and cuisines, and spending time with family and friends. I also stay active through tennis, basketball and cricket, and I’m passionate about landscape photography. I love to cook, especially Indian food.
