LGBTQ Clinic Frequently Asked Questions
What is an LGBTQ clinic?
An LGBTQ clinic offers dedicated health care services for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning and queer communities in a comfortable and welcoming environment. Every member of the UnityPoint Clinic LGBTQ clinic team has had LGBTQ-specific training. This training, through One Iowa Safe Zone Training, is to make sure our clinic setting is welcoming and assuring for all our patients.
Do you have a policy that protects LGBTQ patients?
UnityPoint Health - Des Moines and UnityPoint Clinic do not tolerate discrimination. Our office appreciates the diversity of human beings and does not discriminate based on race, age, religion, ability, marital status, sexual orientation, sex, gender expression or gender identity. UnityPoint Health providers and team members proudly support the American Medical Association nondiscrimination policy. All are welcome here. For our full patient rights and responsibilities please see a link here.
How is an LGBTQ clinic different from primary care?
It is specialized care within a primary care clinic; we offer primary care services including additional LGBTQ services. UnityPoint Health - Des Moines and UnityPoint Clinic recognized that the LGBTQ community had been underserved with unique health needs. Similar to how sports medicine is an extension of physical therapy or veteran care is specific to the needs of the military population, LGBTQ patients need providers who understand their health needs and access to specialists with expertise in LGBTQ health care.
How do I schedule an appointment with the LGBTQ clinic?
You can call the clinic at 515-241-7397 and leave a voicemail or you can request an appointment online. A representative will be in touch within one (1) business day.
Where is the clinic located?
We are located on Iowa Methodist Medical Center's (IMMC) Main Campus Downtown Des Moines within the John Stoddard Cancer Center building at 1221 Pleasant Street, Suite 200. There is a free parking ramp for patients just to the West of our building available for your use. Please enter through the parking ramp and walking through the atrium.
