Annual Report

Grateful for life's unexpected heroes

Generosity can come from the most unexpected places.

For instance, Stephen Benda. Born and raised in Cedar Rapids, never moving from the house he grew up in, Steve led a quiet, unassuming life. But when he realized he was losing his battle with cancer, Steve reached out to the Foundation to talk about his legacy.

Stephen Benda, like so many of our patients, was grateful for the compassionate care he received from the doctors, nurses and other caregivers in our UnityPoint Health – St. Luke's family. His generous gift of $3.8 million—one of the largest in St. Luke's history—will make a huge impact in the lives of our patients and their loved ones. And through this gift, the name of Stephen W. Benda will live on for generations to come.

The same can be said of Viola Reth, a former St. Luke's nurse and teacher who passed away in 2017 at the age of 92. Viola's gift of over $500,000 includes an endowment for a scholarship to help St. Luke's continue to attract the best and brightest nursing students. And there are so many other gifts, large and small, from grateful patients, current and former team members, and friends of St. Luke's, that make it possible for the Foundation to support the hospital in giving the health care we'd like our loved ones to receive.

On behalf of everyone at the St. Luke's Foundation, we salute the unexpected heroes—our friends and neighbors whose generosity is making a difference in our community. We are grateful for each and every one of you.

We are also delighted to welcome Michelle Niermann as President and CEO of UnityPoint Health – Cedar Rapids. Michelle has been a member of our St. Luke's family for more than 25 years and we look forward to helping her reach her goal of continuing to transform UnityPoint Health – Cedar Rapids into the pre-eminent health care system in the Midwest.
