Frequently Asked Questions

What does this mean for MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center? Will you keep all services open?

MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center transitioned to UnityPoint Health – Sioux City on September 1. This transition enables us to significantly expand access to care, enhance local services, and better meet the health needs of the region. Our shared goal is to deliver more comprehensive, high-quality care within Sioux City—minimizing the need for patients to travel to Omaha or Sioux Falls. We are committed to maintaining and growing services based on community needs, patient volume, and the continued recruitment and retention of physicians—which will be further supported through this transition.

What should MercyOne team members anticipate will happen on Day 1?

Once the transaction is complete, we will begin a phased process of welcoming MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center team members into the UnityPoint Health family. Work groups are meeting regularly to ensure continuity of patient care. Importantly, preserving continuity of high quality, compassionate care remains our top priority throughout the entire process. UnityPoint Health and MercyOne team members and physicians will continue to provide care and conduct business as usual. There will be minimal operational changes on Day 1.

MercyOne team members will receive clear instructions in advance of any changes impacting their usual work processes. MercyOne team members will get instructions on any updates to badges or access to systems. As part of this transition, agreements will be in place between UPH and MercyOne/Trinity Health so that technology and business services can continue without interruption, supporting a seamless integration process.

What is the expectation of leaders to remove “MercyOne” from signage, forms, badge cover-ups, etc.? How will this process be engaged?

Workgroups are reviewing what is needed for Day 1 when it comes to signage, badge cover ups, forms, etc. CMS requires us to ensure patients know who they are receiving care from and that will mean these items will need to be updated as soon as possible after the transaction. We will communicate instructions for these updates to leaders and team members when final details are determined.

IT

What if I have issues with IT access?

You should still be able to access your same ServiceNow ticket system for IT-related questions or call (888) 667-3003 (system) or 712-279-2201 (local).

How should I be answering the phone? How do I update my voicemail and email signature?

We have created a tip sheet with scripting for answering phones, as well as instructions on how to update your voicemail and email signature.

Human Resources and Benefits

UnityPoint Health recognizes that MercyOne team members are eager to learn more from Human Resources. We have received questions about benefits, including health insurance, life insurance and voluntary options. An integration planning team is actively working to address these questions, and we will share specific answers as soon as they become available.

In the meantime, UnityPoint Health is committed to supporting all MercyOne team members through any transitions that may affect benefits. UnityPoint Health and MercyOne are working closely together to ensure team members receive timely, accurate information to help them plan appropriately.

Employment

Will I still use my badge the same way?

MercyOne staff should continue to use their badges as they normally would. If you have questions, please reach out to your MercyOne HR or IT department lead.

What is the status of MercyOne team members’ employment upon close?

Upon close, most MercyOne employees will remain employed by MercyOne but will become leased employees in order to work in a UnityPoint Health owned hospital.

What does it mean to be a leased employee?

Leased team members will still be paid by and receive benefits through MercyOne. This is a short-term arrangement to support a smooth transition for employees and continuity of care for our patients.

When will the lease end? How will I be notified of this?

We anticipate that most MercyOne team members will transition to employment at UnityPoint Health by the end of 2025. Impacted team members will receive direct communication outlining their individual transition timeline, along with all relevant details.

I need to verify employment for my mortgage/loan/etc. during the employee lease period. How do I do that?

All employment verifications that occur prior to your transition to UnityPoint Health will continue to be managed by MercyOne. MercyOne uses The Work Number to conduct employment verifications. If you have questions regarding this process, please contact MercyOne Human Resources.

Once you officially transition to employment with UnityPoint Health, employment verifications will be managed according to UnityPoint Health’s standard processes.

Some team members have already been notified of a change in their employment status or have moved to UnityPoint Health – why?

UnityPoint Health and MercyOne are working together to transition some team members before the close date. This allows us to ensure continuity of care for our patients and communities, as well as preserve operational transitions and meet appropriate regulatory requirements. We will communicate directly with any impacted team members.

Will I still report to my same leader? How will I know if my supervisor or work location is changing?

At this time, nothing is changing. Our integration workstreams have partnered to determine the best operating model to support patient care, which may result in some changes. We will communicate any impending changes to leadership structure directly to impacted team members.

I am currently working full time with MercyOne and just recently started working at UnityPoint Health as PRN. My salary compensation is different at both facilities, which pay rate will be followed if the merger happens?

Upon close of the transaction, most MercyOne team members will remain employed by MercyOne but will become a leased employee in order to work in a UnityPoint Health owned facility. This means employees will still be paid and receive benefits through MercyOne. This is a short-term arrangement to support a smooth transition for employees and continuity of care for our patients. Therefore, nothing will change immediately for your rate of pay and you will continue to have different compensation rates. Work is still in progress, and we will provide an update near the end of the employee lease.

Benefits

What happens to MercyOne team members’ life insurance, health insurance and other benefits after close?

We do not anticipate any immediate changes to benefits after close. MercyOne health, dental and vision plans are expected to remain in place through the end of the calendar year.

Changes to benefits will occur when MercyOne team members officially transition to UnityPoint Health employment, which is expected by the end of 2025. At that time, team members will participate in benefit enrollment as a new hire (life event), to select their new benefits. For MercyOne team members, please contact MercyOne Human Resources for the status of current benefits. Note that your retirement plan vendor will send information directly to you regarding the transition of your retirement account as you move to UnityPoint Health employment.

What happens to MercyOne team members’ accrued PTO once they become a UnityPoint Health employee?

In general terms, accrued PTO hours will carry over for MercyOne team members transitioning to UnityPoint Health. Employee tenure will also be honored as part of the transition. Specific details will be confirmed as team members begin their transition to UnityPoint Health.
