Why are you inspired to give back to the Allen Foundation?
I have been a supporter of Allen Hospital since 1966. I had an excellent education at Allen College and enjoyed over 32 years working at Allen Hospital. I believe in philanthropy, and Allen Hospital and Allen College have always come first.
What does being a member of Gerard Circle mean to you?
I first knew Dr. Gerard when I was a student at Allen College. He and his partner always made sure the nursing students had plenty of popcorn in the dorm. He was a great surgeon and I took care of many of his patients. Philanthropy meant a great deal to him and he inspired me to give.
Why have you chosen to give so generously to your alma mater & former workplace?
I believe in health care education and preparing our work force for the future. I truly appreciate the endowed scholarship that was established and enjoy meeting the students that benefit from it. Health care has always been a part of my life and I have been fortunate to give my time and talent to improving the care we give as well as education and scholarships through Allen College.
How have you been impacted by volunteering and being involved at Allen?
I was honored to be asked to serve on the Allen Boards and still stay connected to health care and education in my retirement. I love working with people and have made many friends over the years.
Do you have any other accolades?
I received an Honorary Doctorate from Allen College in 2007 and serve on the State of Iowa Hospital Licensing Board.
Do you have any other hobbies or interests?
Spending time with family, friends, reading and playing cards.
