NICU Reunion: Tiffany and Vincent Both Overcome Uncertainty

At 27 weeks pregnant, pre-cancer cells of the cervix were thought to have developed into something more complicated for Tiffany Doughty.

At 32 weeks, it was determined the healthiest course for mom and baby was to welcome her first child into the world prematurely and determine if cancer therapy would be the next step. It was a lot to take in.

“Stress isn’t good for the baby,” Tiffany maintains. For that reason and many others, she thanks neonatologist Dr. Pankaj Nagaraj and the rest of the NICU team at UnityPoint Health – Allen Hospital for alleviating the stress in more ways than one.

Tiffany’s son, Vincent, weighed four pounds, 11 ounces at birth but had trouble getting transferred to Allen Hospital due to insurance uncertainty. One call to Dr. Nagaraj expedited that process, and Vincent arrived at the Allen NICU when he was three weeks old.

While Tiffany continued to focus on the growth and development of her newborn son, there was still the issue of her own health. Dr. Nagaraj helped with that – communicating with other members of her care team at other facilities to get the latest information.

Fortunately, cervical cancer was not present and Tiffany continued to work with the NICU care team to ensure proper development for Vincent and ensure he learned necessary skills.

“I felt at peace while Vincent spent the next three weeks growing and getting ready to come home,” Tiffany added. “Our nurses gave great advice and tips about things that might be disrupting his growth, which I took to heart, followed diligently and Vincent started making great progress.”

Vincent and his family have attended all three Allen NICU Reunions since their experience. This year, you could find a happy, healthy 2-year old splashing in the baby pool without a single concern that he was fully clothed – that’s Vincent.
