UnityPoint Health - Waterloo DAISY Award: Aleshia Bloker

DAISY Award: Aleshia Bloker

Aleshia Bloker, RN, BSN nomination:

Aleshia has been involved with the AACVPR (American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation) for several years now. She has served as a board member of the Iowa Cardiopulmonary Rehab board for four years as well as taken on the responsibility of being on the education committee for the past four years.

The past two years she has gone to Washington D.C. for “Day on the Hill” where she met with senators and house representatives to lobby for pulmonary and cardiac rehab legislative changes. She has devoted a lot of time to this association and truly believes in the mission of the organization: “reducing morbidity, mortality and disability from cardiovascular, and pulmonary disease through education, prevention, rehabilitation, research, and disease management.”

That mission is what she strives for while at work here at Allen Hospital as well. She is very thorough and passionate with her work in the Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehab unit which has helped them achieve and maintain AACVPR certification over the past several years. Patients, families, and co-workers recognize her passion to deliver the highest standard in nursing care so that the best outcome for every patient every time is met.

I recently went to the Iowa Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehab annual conference and I was thoroughly impressed with the work I saw Aleshia do. Knowing that she does a lot of this work behind the scenes and on her own time and without recognition really made me proud of her!

The department and the hospital is very lucky to have her! The education she brings back to the department with her work that she does with AACVPR really shows. The patients appreciate her ability to teach them at their level so they are able to reach their goals and maintain their health.

One patient writes on his program evaluation form that “Aleshia is the Best! I am a three-time program participant.” Another writes, “I learned a lot about my disease and Aleshia has inspired me to keep exercising for just ME!”

Aleshia has also inspired a patient and given them “more of a sense of recent accomplishment, I find myself smiling a lot more!” Aleshia demonstrates Allen’s FOCUS values while at work and out in the community and is a great role model for the nursing profession.
