Is the COVID-19 Vaccine Safe?

Wondering if the COVID-19 vaccine is safe for you? Dr. Dave Williams is here to explain why he trusts the vaccine and why you should, too.

In order to issue emergency drug use authorization, the FDA has done vigorous research. The Pfizer vaccine, specifically, was tested on over 44,000 people before being approved for emergency use. At UnityPoint Health, our vaccine experts have also reviewed all the data to ensure the COVID-19 vaccine is safe and effective for our healthcare workers and for our patients when it becomes publicly available.

What are Common Side Effects of the COVID Vaccine?

Wonder what side effects you'll experience after receiving the vaccine? Dr. Dave Williams says some people will experience a sore arm at the injection site, headache and fatigue. He says those are the most common side effects of most vaccines, not just the COVID vaccine.

For more information on potential side effects of the vaccination, we recommend reading the Pfizer EUA Fact Sheet and Moderna EUA Fact Sheet.

Will I Need to Wear a Mask After Receiving the COVID Vaccine?

Yes, you will need to mask after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine. Dr. Dave Williams says it's still important to follow all the guidelines we've come to know during the pandemic: wear a mask, social distance, wash your hands and stay home when you're sick. He explains that we don't know how long the immunity from the vaccine is going to last, and it's going to be a while before a large percentage of our communities get this vaccine.
