Nurses recognized for pediatric department improvements
Two pediatric nurses and a Clinical Practice Expert nurse at UnityPoint Health – St. Luke’s received the 2016 Innovations in Patient Care Award from the Iowa Organization of Nurse Leaders (IONL).
St. Luke’s nurses Matthew Robertson, RN, Breanna Daniels, RN and Marsha Henn, MSN, RNC-MNN, were recognized for their work in reducing pediatric patient distress levels.
Studies have shown that pediatric patients’ primary source of pain during hospitalization was related to having blood drawn. Robertson wanted to reduce this distress and worked with Daniels and Henn to accomplish this goal.
The trio conducted a study that showed a significant drop in patient anxiety when using an existing IV catheter to draw blood, rather than drawing blood traditionally. The results of this study have resulted in implementing blood draws from an existing IV catheter whenever possible as standard practice in the pediatric department at St. Luke’s.
Pediatric patient care has significantly improved thanks to the hard work of this team!
