What’s in a name? If you ask parents of little ones born in the last year, they might tell you it’s all about tradition. At UnityPoint Health - St. Luke’s, traditional baby names reigned supreme in 2016.
At St. Luke’s, a Children's Miracle Network hospital, Sophia was the top girl’s name in 2016. Alternate spellings included Sofia and Sophya. The name beat out last year’s frontrunner Evelyn, which did not make the top 10 list in 2016. Other popular girls’ names included Harper, Olivia, Zoe, Amelia, Natalie, and Avery.
In the boys’ department, Jackson took the top spot for the second year in a row with some parents choosing alternate spellings including Jaxon, Jaxsen and Jaxson. Other popular names included Graysen, Carson, Connor, Lucas, Wyatt, Abel, and Logan.
While traditional names ruled the list of most popular newborn names, it’s hard to miss the more creative and unique names given to some Siouxland newborns. Some of the more creative girls’ names included Fallon, Jerzee, Krimzyn, Lennon, Magnolia, Oaklie, Rooney, and Timberlynn. For the boys, unique names such as Archer, Beckham, Boston, Castiel, Hudson, Jagger, Kinnick, Lennox, Quilliam, and Zeppelin were given.
Each year, approximately 2,000 babies are born at St. Luke’s, making the hospital families’ number one choice for childbirth in Siouxland.
