Eight years ago Sally Smith worked hard to bring Iowa’s first PACE program to Sioux City. UnityPoint Health – St. Luke’s Siouxland PACE, a program of all-inclusive care for the elderly, initially started with just five participants. Now, caring for 152 participants they have outgrown their location and have moved to a new, much larger facility located at 1200 Tri View Avenue. With more space, they will be able to grow their census by over 100 participants.

The program has experienced a lot of change over the past eight years, but one thing has remained consistent and that is Smith’s never ending commitment to the PACE program and her staff.  This has inspired several staff members to nominate Smith, Siouxland PACE program manager, as St. Luke’s Employee of the Month for April.

“Sally is such a delight to work with,” says Chad Markham, Senior Vice President of Network Development at St. Luke’s. “She is passionate about doing the right thing all of the time for her staff, the PACE program, and PACE participants.”

Her fellow employees filled out nomination forms explaining why she should receive the award and these were just a few of the following reasons: “She is the best boss I have ever had. She is an inspiration and great mentor. Even though she is incredibly busy, her door is always open and she welcomes all staff and participants. Everyone loves her!”

Coworkers also described Smith as “dedicated, helpful, supportive, knowledgeable, caring, loyal and respectful.”

Smith’s boss, Randy Ehlers, Executive Director of Siouxland PACE agrees with all of those comments adding, “Sally is a great leader who leads by example. She is caring and compassionate for participants and staff.”

As the St. Luke’s Employee of the Month for April, Smith received a special watch from Greenberg’s Jewelers, her own premium parking space, gift cards to the St. Luke’s Glass Apple Gift Shop, The Parkview Café and a gift certificate to be used at an area restaurant. She will also have the chance to be voted Employee of the Year at the end of the year. That comes with a paid vacation.
