What is Open Enrollment?

If you have yet to hear about what the Open Enrollment period is, this is the time in which people who are eligible have the opportunity to enroll in an affordable health insurance plan through the Health Insurance Marketplace.

When Does Open Enrollment End?

Open enrollment for the Affordable Care Act started on November 15, 2014, and will come to an end on February 15, 2015. With the date quickly approaching, UnityPoint Health wants to ensure your health coverage is the top priority. In addition to that, the next opportunity to enroll will not be until the next enrollment period taking place at the end of 2015. Don’t wait, sign up today and make sure you and your loved ones are covered!

Will I Be Eligible After Enrollment Ends?

To purchase Marketplace insurance outside of the Open Enrollment period, you will have to qualify for a Special Enrollment Period due to certain qualifying life events. Such as:

  • Marriage
  • Birth or adoption of a child
  • Loss of other health coverage
  • If you are applying for Medicaid or Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP)

Who Is Eligible For Enrollment?

If you are not currently enrolled in a public or private health care plan and do not have health care through your employer, then you are eligible for enrollment. With that, no one can be denied coverage due to a medical condition, and all should qualify for some form of coverage through an employer, Medicaid, Medicare or the new statewide Health Insurance Marketplaces.

Coverage Options

  • Iowa Medicaid: The Iowa Health and Wellness Plan provides health care coverage for Iowans ages 19-64.
  • Medicare Coverage: Those who have Medicare coverage through original Medicare or a Medicare Advantage Plan, will not be affected.
  • Illinois Medicaid Programs: Discover if you are qualified for health coverage through additional Medicaid programs in Illinois.

When purchasing private health plans the insurance must cover a thorough set of benefits.

All plans based in the Marketplace include these benefits:

  • Emergency services
  • Hospitalization
  • Ambulatory patient services
  • Laboratory services
  • Mental health and substance abuse use disorders
  • Preventative and wellness services and chronic disease management
  • Maternity and newborn care
  • Prescription drugs
  • Rehabilitation services and devices
  • Pediatric services including oral and vision care

If your current insurance provider does not offer one or more of these services, you could be subject to tax penalties.

How Do I Enroll?

To apply for health insurance, there are four ways you can do so:

  • HealthCare.gov
  • Phone
  • Mail
  • In person with the help of a trained navigator or assister

Why Open Enrollment is Crucial

The Affordable Care Act states that nearly everyone legally living in the United States is required to have health insurance. By enrolling before February 15th, 2015, those who do so will avoid the penalties.
