Breastfeeding Basics Checklist

After giving birth to a new baby, your nurses and lactation specialist will help you learn the basics of breastfeeding. However, before baby comes home, there are certain items our providers suggest keeping on hand for a stress-free experience. Erin Rowan, D.O., UnityPoint Health, gives us her checklist as we celebrate National Breastfeeding Awareness Month.

Breastfeeding Basics Checklist

  1. Comfortable chair
  2. It’s important to make sure you have a place that you feel comfortable feeding your child.

  3. Pillow
  4. There are many types of pillows available and some are specifically advertised for breastfeeding. Find one that is right for you.

  5. Burp rag or towel
  6. This is to catch any spit up, as well as milk that comes out from the opposite breast while you are feeding.

  7. Breast milk pump
  8. If you are planning on pumping, looking into what features are important in a pump for you.

  9. Cleaning materials
  10. Make sure you have a way to clean bottles and/or pump parts thoroughly between uses.

  11. Breast milk storage bags
  12. You can purchase specialized storage bags, which are designed for milk collection and storage. You can also use clean containers, such as screw cap bottles or hard plastic cups with tight caps.

  13. Storage bag labels
  14. Make sure to use waterproof labels and ink. Label each container with the date the milk was expressed as well as the quantity of milk in each bag.

If you have any breastfeeding questions or concerns, consult your UnityPoint Health lactation specialist, OB/GYN or primary care provider.
