first case of Zika virus is sexually transmitted in the U.S.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirms a Texas resident is the first in the United States to acquire the Zika virus through sexual transmission. The patient contracted the virus after having sexual contact with an ill individual who recently returned from a country where the virus is spreading. Due to medical confidentiality, the identity of the infected pair is not known.

Besides sexual activity, the CDC says the virus is transmitted in a series of ways, including by a specific kind of mosquito and through blood. It’s also possible for a mother who is infected with the Zika virus near the time of delivery to pass the virus on to her newborn, however, this is rare. Scientists are also studying how the virus impacts fetuses. It is believed that the Zika virus can cause a birth defect known as Microcephaly.

In a statement to CNN, the CDC stressed there was no risk to a developing fetus in the Texas case. The CDC also told CNN it is working to provide guidance on sexual transmission regarding the Zika virus.
