Sioux City Physician Appointed to Commission in the American Academy of Family Physicians


Douglas W. Martin, MD, FAADEP, FACOEM, FAAFP, Medical Director of UnityPoint Health – St. Luke’s Occupational Medicine, has been appointed to serve the American Academy of Family Physicians’ Commission on Education for a four year term beginning December 15, 2017.

The Commission on Education is one of eight commissions that direct AAFP policies and programs. This commission oversees the development of recommended policy and the dissemination of expertise and new information related to the education and professional development of family physicians until completion of the residency training period.

As the Medical Director of St. Luke’s Occupational Medicine, Martin provides clinical and operational leadership to business health services in Sioux City and the surrounding communities. St. Luke’s Occupational Medicine specializes in business health with programs, clinics and medical services to improve and maintain the wellness of companies and their employees. 

Martin received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. He is certified in family medicine by the American Board of Family Medicine and is a certified Medical Review Officer and Aviation Medical Examiner. Martin has many notable contributions to the medical field, including; serving on several boards, completing hundreds of educational presentations and authoring two books and several articles. 

To maintain membership in the American Academy of Family Physicians, Martin is required to complete a minimum of 150 credits of accredited continuing medical education every three years. The AAFP was the first national medical specialty organization to set continuing education requirements for its members. This requirement helps ensure family physician members remain educated on the most up-to-date medical technologies, research and techniques.
