Stroke survivor gets voice back through personalized speech therapy program

ROCK ISLAND - Lois Grissom and her husband Gary have enjoyed great conversations since their first meeting nearly 70 years ago.  But after Lois suffered two strokes in two weeks, she was left unable to speak until she met Kylie Lucas, Speech Pathologist at Trinity Outpatient Rehabilitation Services in Rock Island.

“You couldn’t understand what Lois was saying,” said Gary.  “I was afraid to death.  Kylie has been our angel.”

Lois was referred to Kylie after her care through UnityPoint Health® – Trinity’s nationally recognized stroke care program.  She began a personalized speech therapy program designed by Kylie, which her husband says produced instant results.

“Kylie worked right away to get Lois to get the syllables and vowels in place,” said Gary.

“It’s the best thing we ever did, “said Lois. “I love her!  She’s a wonderful person and very knowledgeable.  It’s a joy to go.”

Lois says she’s continuing therapy on her way to making a full recovery.  At home, she uses an app on her tablet computer to practice her therapy routine between visits.  She says thanks to Kylie, she has a voice again.

“Kylie is interested in the people she cares for,” said Gary.  “She’s very interested in Lois and making everything better for her.  We’re looking forward to many more conversations together.”
