“I couldn’t ask for any more. Everybody has been wonderful.”
After years of suffering with sleep issues, James Sibley feels fortunate to have received the help he needed at UnityPoint Health – Trinity. Before the 74-year-old heard about a newly available treatment, restless nights and drowsy days had become the norm. It was impacting quality of life for the once avid bowler and golfer. For a while, he tried breathing machines at night without success.
“I had no rest. I’d lay down and take a nap, sit down and take a nap. I was constantly tired,” says Sibley.
At the Trinity Sleep Center, Sibley’s doctor identified him as a candidate for a breakthrough treatment known as the remede® System from Respicardia. UnityPoint Health – Trinity is only the second hospital in the country to offer this cutting-edge system outside of clinical studies. Sibley was referred to a cardiologist for the minimally invasive outpatient procedure, where the remede® System was placed under the skin in the upper chest area.
“Everything along the way from Trinity hospital itself, everybody has been very helpful.”
For adults with moderate to severe central sleep apnea (CSA), the device stimulates a nerve in the chest to send signals to the diaphragm, the large muscle that controls breathing. It helps regulate breathing overnight to improve sleep and quality of life. Sibley was the first UnityPoint Health – Trinity patient to receive the remede® System implant and says that as soon as it was activated, he began to see improvements in his sleep.
“Pretty much right away it’s gotten better. It’s gotten more restful,” says Sibley. “It’s been great, and I don’t even know it’s there, that’s the nice part.”
At a follow-up visit six weeks into his therapy, Sibley was all smiles while describing the changes he’s experienced. He feels lucky to be the first in the region to receive this treatment and appreciative of all the doctors and team members who’ve helped him along the way.
With better sleep comes better quality of life. Now, Sibley says he has more energy to get back to enjoying some of his favorite things.
“I haven’t played golf in a couple years now, maybe three years. I’m ready.”
