About Helena McNamara, MA, CCC-SLP

Biography

Professional Statement:

As a Speech-Language Pathologist, my philosophy centers around meeting each child where they are, guiding families with empathy and understanding, and curating individualized plans that foster the greatest success for every child. I believe in building meaningful connections and creating a supportive environment where children can thrive and reach their full communicative potential. I have a particular passion for working with children diagnosed with Childhood Apraxia of Speech. To strengthen my clinical skills in this area, I have pursued specialized training, including completion of the PROMPT (Restructuring Oral Muscular Phonetic Targets) course. PROMPT is a tactile-kinesthetic approach that uses touch cues to the articulators (jaw, tongue, lips) to physically guide speech production. This evidence-based method has enhanced my ability to provide precise, effective therapy for children with motor planning and speech production challenges. In addition to my work with Apraxia, I enjoy supporting gestalt language processors, especially those on the autism spectrum. Through the Meaningful Speech course, I have developed a deeper understanding of gestalt language processing, child-led therapy, and how to nurture language development through natural, meaningful interactions. This training has allowed me to meet children at their unique stage of communication and empower them to move toward self-generated, flexible language use. Ultimately, my goal is to be not only a therapist but also a collaborator—partnering with families to celebrate progress, overcome challenges, and ensure that every child’s voice is heard and valued.

Why did you become a speech-language pathologist?

My decision to become a speech-language pathologist stems from a deep desire to help others—especially children with varying diagnoses—find their voice and reach their fullest potential. Communication is such a powerful part of who we are and supporting others in developing that skill is something I find incredibly meaningful. As a speech-language pathologist, my goal is to empower each child I work with to express themselves and be understood. Every small success—a new sound, a first word, or a confident sentence—is a step toward something greater. Ultimately, I want to help the smallest person find their big voice.

What is the most important thing for patients to know about you?

What’s most important about me as a therapist is that I bring a hands-on, humorous, and genuine approach to my work. I believe that therapy is not only about helping the child, but also about supporting the entire family. My goal is to guide families in understanding their child’s diagnosis and unique needs, while creating a space that feels supportive, encouraging, and full of hope. I strive to meet each family where they are, collaborating with them to find strategies and solutions that make sense for their lives. Above all, I want the families I work with to feel understood, empowered, and confident in their child’s journey toward communication and growth.
