LINKED: Breathing and Postural Control: PART 1 ONLY
This course, developed by Dr. Mary Massery, proposes a new definition of "core stability" as the dynamic control of trunk pressures to optimize postural stability (balance). The "soda pop can" model links breathing mechanics to postural control using multi-system interactions, including the role of the vocal folds and pelvic floor. Part 1 focuses on foundational information and quick interventions (positioning, ventilatory strategies). Part 2 focuses on hands-on techniques: assessing "normal" breathing patterns, neuromotor breathing retraining, and manual assistive cough techniques. Applicable for any pediatric or adult patient (or therapist) who breathes.
