Intended Audience

Occupational therapists, speech therapists and other interested therapy professionals who participate in the care of pediatric patients.


Purpose

The DIR® Floortime approach is a comprehensive method of improving social, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral delays. DIR involves an assessment of a child’s individual strengths and difficulties in all areas of functioning and sensory processing. A key component to the DIR Model is the child’s natural emotions and interests. Integrating what he or she is naturally drawn to is essential to empower the different parts of the mind and brain to work together and successively achieve higher levels of social, emotional, and intellectual capacities.


Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to describe:

D (Development) - 6 levels of development

I (Individual profile) - sensory - motor - biology

R (Relationship) - How we use Dialectic Behavioral Therapy to support emotion regulation - the power of parents - the power of co-regulation

9:00 – 10:00 am: Regulation - emotional, physical, sensory - once established…what emerges is:

10:00 – 10:15 am: Break

10:15 – 11:00 am: Instruction/Education

11:00 am – 12:00 pm: OT/ST sign up for 1:1 Q & A

12:00 – 1:00 pm: Connection - connection to self and others… what emerges is:

1:00 – 1:15 pm: Break

1:15 – 2:00 pm: Problem solving, vulnerability, learning


Ways we can learn and process:

  • Role playing
  • Video review
  • Exercises to play around with 1, 2, 3 above
  • Small groups discussion - case study practice


Virtual follow up:

2.5 - 3 hours via Zoom

  • Follow up questions
  • Video supervision
  • Processing specific clinical challenges

Continuing Education TBD

A certificate of participation will be provided after successful completion of the course with a maximum of 15 contact hours awarded.

It is the responsibility of licensees to determine if this continuing education activity meets the requirements of their profession.
