Don't Let Sinus Problems Get You Down

(GRINNELL, Iowa – November 4, 2021) Sinus infections bring facial pain, pressure and overall discomfort, which can leave you with your head under a pillow for days. Joseph Whitman, DO with the UnityPoint Health® – Grinnell ENT Clinic covers how to relieve sinus infections.

“Sinus infections can look different depending on the individual. Typically, a sinus infection includes a combination of sinus pressure, discolored mucus in shades of yellow or green, runny or stuffy nose, headache, fever, tooth pain and/or earaches,” says Dr. Whitman.

Think you might have a sinus infection? Dr. Whitman recommends these four treatment options for home care.

  1. Utilize Over-the-Counter (OTC) Remedies. These remedies are typically used for colds and can also help treat the discomfort associated with sinus congestion. Tylenol or ibuprofen work well for fever, headaches, sore throat symptoms and body aches. Decongestants work to minimize inflammation and swelling that cause sinus congestion.

  2. Use Neti Pots and Sinus Rinses. This method can be helpful for nasal congestion and helps clear sinus drainage from the nose. It’s important that individuals only utilize sterile or distilled water when using the Neti Pot or saline rinse. Side effects from the Neti Pot include nasal dryness and, at times, bloody noses, which can be relieved by decreasing frequency of use and making sure you’re using a saline solution.

  3. Plug in a Humidifier. Humidifiers increase the humidity in the home and can relieve cold and sinus congestion. They can also assist the sinuses to properly drain. If you are using a humidifier it is important to properly clean and dry it every two to three days.

  4. Make an Appointment. Many patients with a sinus infection, viral or bacterial, seek medical treatment sooner rather than later because the symptoms are very uncomfortable. Most sinus infections are caused by viruses and do not need antibiotics unless the person has more concerning symptoms.

“If individuals are experiencing repeated sinus infections, nasal congestion or other sinus related symptoms that they are concerned about, I recommend scheduling an appointment so we can find a solution together,” says Dr. Whitman.

Don’t let repeat sinus issues get you down. If you are experiencing severe or recurring discomfort, call (641) 236-2585 to schedule an appointment to discuss concerns with Dr. Whitman at the UnityPoint Health – Grinnell ENT Clinic. Dr. Whitman sees patients in Grinnell, Pella and Oskaloosa.
