UnityPoint Health® – Grinnell Regional Medical Center (GRMC) welcomes Michael R. Line, MD, MMM, to the team as Chief Medical Officer (CMO) in Grinnell. Line started in Grinnell on October 1 as CMO, a position that is new to GRMC.
“I am very excited to be working with the team at Grinnell Regional Medical Center,” says Line. “I’m passionate about my work to help my peers – and by extension their patients. My focus is on quality and safety metrics, how we are doing and what we can do to provide even better care. I also partner with our medical staff and administrators to develop strategies that support the health needs of our communities.”
Line earned his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin Medical School and completed a pediatric residency with Blank Children’s Hospital. He went on to receive a master’s degree of medical management from the University of Southern California.
Line practiced as a pediatric hospitalist - providing inpatient, specialized pediatric care - as well as a pediatric procedural sedation, during which Line was one of three lead physicians implementing a program to provide sedation to children undergoing painful medical procedures and prolonged imaging studies. He has been a pediatric provider for 17 years.
“We are very pleased to welcome Dr. Line to our team as chief medical officer. He will be a great asset to our organization,” says Jennifer Havens, chief executive officer at GRMC. “Dr. Line brings a unique perspective to our team as a physician. He can ‘speak both languages’ as he has experienced both the administrator and provider sides of health care. We are excited for the expertise he will bring to Grinnell and the positive impact it will have for our team and our communities.”
Line currently is the medical director of inpatient medicine at Blank Children’s Hospital and serves as CMO for Greene County Medical Center in Jefferson, Iowa. Line will serve as CMO at Grinnell in a part-time capacity.
“I always knew I wanted to work with kids in some way. My mom had an in-home daycare when I was growing up, and I wanted to either be a teacher or a pediatrician,” says Line. “I love being a pediatrician, but the chief medical officer role gives me the opportunity to impact more than just one patient at a time. By helping other providers give better care, I can reach many more patients of all ages.”
Part of Line’s responsibilities will include coordinating provider care efforts throughout UnityPoint Health – Grinnell to ensure the best quality of service and care access for patients. Line will also share his knowledge in recruitment and hiring of physicians in Grinnell to help bring the right people with the right skills to care for our patients.
“The medical staff in Grinnell is glad to have Dr. Line on our team,” says Laura Ferguson, MD, president of GRMC medical staff. “He is taking time to get to know us, and from a provider standpoint, he understands the challenges that we’re faced with. He will be a great resource for our physicians.”
Line lives in Waukee with his wife and two children. He is enjoying his time in the hospital, clinics and community.
