Teresa Young, PhD completed her undergraduate degree in psychology at Illinois State University. She earned an MS in clinical-counseling psychology at Illinois State University and worked as a crisis intervention specialist before returning to school. Dr. Young then earned her PhD in counseling psychology at Tennessee State University. She completed an internship with the Vanderbilt University – Tennessee Valley VA Consortium, which provided training in a variety of contexts, including university counseling center, primary care, inpatient rehabilitation, and inpatient psychiatry. Dr. Young acquired additional training through a health psychology postdoctoral fellowship with an emphasis on interdisciplinary teamwork at the Tennessee Valley VA system. Through this fellowship, Dr. Young also received training in the domains of pain psychology and geriatrics. 

She joined UnityPoint Health-St Luke’s Hospital in 2017 and divides her time between inpatient rehabilitation and outpatient psychological services, which include psychotherapy, pre-surgical evaluations, and co-facilitating the Pain Psychology Program. Dr. Young is also in the process of developing peer and caregiver support programs for the inpatient rehabilitation unit. Dr. Young conceptualizes patients from a biopsychosocial framework and utilizes an integrative approach to psychotherapy informed by the transtheoretical model of change. 

She is an Iowa licensed psychologist and health service provider in psychology. Dr. Young’s clinical interests involve adjustment to disability, aging, and health-related problems; caregiver support; end-of life issues; suicide prevention; and chronic pain management. She enjoys consultation with hospital staff and providing instruction related to psychological concepts. She also serves on St. Luke’s Diversity Committee and on the Diversity and Social Justice Committee of the Iowa Psychological Association. She was also previously active with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and Alive Hospice in Middle Tennessee.
