Did you know that many people are unaware that sudden cardiac arrest and a heart attack are two different conditions, which are are often confused with one another? How is sudden cardiac arrest different from a heart attack?

Sudden cardiac arrest is not a heart attack. A heart attack occurs when a blocked artery prevents oxygen-rich blood from reaching a section of the heart. When oxygen in the blood can't reach the heart muscle, the heart becomes damaged and begins to die.

Sudden cardiac arrest occurs when the electrical system to the heart malfunctions and suddenly becomes very irregular, causing the heart to begin dangerously fast. With the heart's pumping action disrupted, it cannot pump blood to the brain, lungs and other vital organs. Unfortunately, death can occur within minutes if the victim does not receive proper treatment.

Symptoms of a Heart Attack

The first step to preventing a heart attack is to understand the risk factors.  Heart attacks can be difficult to determine since symptoms may not occur at the same time, and instead gradually appear. It is important to remember that the longer a patient goes without treatment, the greater the damage.

  • Chest pain
  • Pain in other parts of your upper body, including one or both arms, your back, neck, jaw or abdomen
  • Nausea or stomach cramping
  • Dizziness
  • Cold sweat
  • Shortness of breath

Sudden cardiac arrest symptoms are immediate and drastic.

  • Sudden collapse
