UnityPoint Health - Trinity Regional Medical Center Transitions Emergency Ambulance Services to City of Fort Dodge
Based on results and recommendations from the Fitch EMS Community Study that was conducted in February 2017, UnityPoint Health – Trinity Regional Medical Center and Fort Dodge Fire Department (FDFD) have jointly decided to combine EMS services under the City of Fort Dodge governance to provide a best-practice model for the community.
“This new structure will ensure a more sustainable model for both entities, while continuing the strong collaboration in delivering high quality EMS to the community,” shares Steve Hergenreter, Fire Chief, FDFD.
In working together on the follow-up items from the Fitch Study, it was determined that the City of Fort Dodge has access to municipal funding for new ambulances as well as other equipment needs. This transition will provide an opportunity to get a newer fleet of ambulances, and more efficient and coordinated use of resources from both entities.
Additionally, FDFD leadership has agreed to doing what is best in the long-term for TRMC employees, FDFD and Webster county residents. The City of Fort Dodge will give preference to UnityPoint Health – Trinity Regional Medical Center employees but they will need to apply and go through the civil service process to be hired. Competitive wages and IPERS benefits will be offered.
“Doing what is best for the community has and continues to be our priority. This study illustrated the importance of the share governance; and while we take pride in our EMS services we provided over the decades, we know this transition is ultimately best for the community,” states, Mike Dewerff, UnityPoint Health – Fort Dodge President and CEO. “Additionally, we are reassured in knowing the City of Fort Dodge will take care of our EMS team as well as EMS important programs like the community paramedicine program.”
All EMS staff will rotate and be stationed in the Trinity Emergency Department. Current FDFD employees will also be included in the rotation.
The tentative date as to when the transition will become effective is July 1, 2018.
