FORT DODGE, IOWA (April 3, 2020) – During the COVID-19 pandemic, UnityPoint Health – Berryhill Center will be providing behavioral health services to individuals experiencing a mental health crisis that would typically be seen in the emergency room.
“As COVID-19 cases continue to increase nationwide, we continue to create surge plans to help ensure patients are getting the care when and where they need it,” shares Aaron McHone, Director of UnityPoint Health – Berryhill Center.
Services provided at Berryhill Center in mental health crisis situations will include receiving an assessment from a licensed mental health clinician and then being connected to appropriate interventions. Additional interventions could include but are not limited to:
- Telehealth evaluation from a psychiatric provider
- Inpatient psychiatric admission
- Admittance into the crisis stabilization center
- Connection to other community resources for basic needs
Based on regulatory and capacity limits at this location, Berryhill Center is able to see patients 7 days a week from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Patients must be 18 years and older or have a guardian with them.
Patients are advised to utilize the Emergency Room instead if they are also needing medical attention (i.e. open or fresh wounds), are a minor who does not have a guardian to sign a consent to treat, demonstrating aggressive behavior or having a crisis outside of the hours listed above.
For the safety of our patients and staff, visitor restrictions have been implemented. Patients 18 years old and older may have one support person, if needed. Patients 17 years and younger may have two support people. No siblings or other children will be allowed. In all cases, visitors will only be allowed if they do not have symptoms of respiratory infection (fever, cough, and shortness of breath).
