Take Strides Toward a Healthier Life
Now that summer is in full swing and the daylight is lasting longer, this is the perfect time to lace up the sneakers and hit the pavement! Whether walking or running, you can take strides toward improving your health. While walking isn't as intense as running, both activities target the same muscle groups- including the heart!
A new study published by the American Heart Association found:
"Walkers lower their risk of high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes just as much as runners."
And the more the participants walk or run, the greater the benefit of lowering their heart disease risk!
Participating in aerobic exercise on a regular basis (like walking or jogging) can reduce the risk of death due to cardiovascular problems by:
- Strengthening the muscles involved in respiration, facilitating the flow of air in and out of the lungs
- Strengthening and enlarging the heart muscle, improving its pumping efficiency and reducing the resting heart rate (known as aerobic conditioning)
- Improving circulation efficiency and reducing blood pressure
- Increasing the total number of red blood cells in the body, facilitating transport of oxygen
- Improving mental health, including reducing stress and lowering the incidence of depression
- Reducing the risk for diabetes
For those of you who like to turn up the intensity during your workouts, the benefits don't stop here. Higher-impact aerobic activities, such as jogging or jumping rope, can stimulate bone growth and reduce the risk of osteoporosis for both men and women!
