At UnityPoint Health Finley Hospital our mission is to consistently improve the health of those in our Tri-State areas, and surround our patients and families with the best coordinated care possible.
It's with unquestionable understanding that we strive to provide the best outcome for every patient, every time. As patient-focused as we are, it's important that we visualize the impact we're having on our local economy.
According to the latest study by the Iowa Hospital Association (IHA), Finley generates 1,430 jobs, which adds $71,825,745 to the Dubuque County economy. In addition, Finley employees themselves spend over $22 million on retail sales and contribute nearly $1.3 million in state sales tax revenue. The IHA study examined the jobs, income, retail sales and sales tax produced by hospitals and the rest of the state's health care sector.
The study was compiled from hospital-submitted data on the American Hospital Association's Annual Survey of Hospitals with software that other industries have used to determine their economic impact. IHA found that Iowa hospitals directly employ 71,324 people statewide and create another 50,131 jobs outside the hospital sector. As an income source, hospitals provide $4.2 billion in salaries/benefits and generate another $1.8 billion through other jobs that depend on hospitals.
In all, Iowa's health care sector, which includes employed clinicians, long-term care services and assisted living centers, pharmacies and other medical and health services, directly and indirectly, provides 293,758 Iowa jobs, or more than one-fifth of the state's total employment.
Hospitals, such as Finley, continue to have a positive influence on local economies, both in the ways they provide employment, as well as through hospital purchases from local business, and the impact of employee spending and tax support.
