When Becca Kenkel came to Finley Hospital to deliver her fourth baby, there were quite a few new things about her upcoming experience – delivering during the COVID-19 pandemic and having a C-Section.
Becca was tested for COVID-19 48 hours prior to her scheduled induction, as a way to keep her and Finley staff safe during her hospital stay.
“I was a little nervous at first, because everyone had said how uncomfortable the test was,” Becca said. “When I came to the hospital, I had my temperature taken. A nurse asked me a few questions and tested me for COVID-19. I was confused at first why I was being tested 48 hours prior to my induction, instead of the day of, but the nurses told me it takes time to get the results back.”
With additional safety precautions in place to protect patients, visitors and team members during the COVID-19 pandemic, care looked a little different for Becca this time, as team members were wearing eye protection and masks, washing hands, and following sanitizing guidelines throughout Family Birthing Suites. A support person is allowed with moms in the unit, but other visitors are not allowed.
Overall, Becca was impressed with the level of safe care the team members were providing her with during her birthing experience.
“It made me more comfortable and at home,” Becca said. “It just made me feel good that the staff was watching out for their germs to protect me and my baby.”
On July 16th, Becca and her husband, John, welcomed their fourth child, Duke, into the world, joining brothers Mason, Eli and Brady.
With this being a new birth experience for Becca by having a C-Section, she was thankful for the expertise of her care team.
“The doctors and nurses were very easy to talk to and were very straightforward, I appreciated that,” Becca said. “I had so many questions for them, since it was my first C-Section. They just really helped direct me to take care of myself, especially after a C-section.”
One part of Becca’s recent stay at Finley Hospital that she remembers most is the exceptional care staff not only provided to her, but her husband, as well.
“All of the nurses here are like my mom in a way,” Becca said. “They reminded me to order meals, got me water or whatever else I needed. They were also very accommodating to my husband during this stay. When we were here during the pandemic, the nurses took complete care of us both. They truly take care of your physical health and emotional well-being.”
Having delivered all four of her babies at Finley Hospital, Becca has a fond memory when she was delivering her third child.
“When I went in for my third delivery, the nurses had remembered that I had two boys,” Becca said. “They were all rooting for a girl, since we didn’t know what we were having. We ended up having another boy. They just all felt like family, and it’s very reassuring to me as an expecting mom. It’s been a great experience every time.”
