Volunteer Spotlight: Gladys Hillebrand

Why do you choose to volunteer at UnityPoint Health Finley Hospital?

I did my clinical education here.  I enjoy volunteering.  I believe it is a great honor to volunteer at Finley Hospital.  I was born here in 1946, and at that time they put the picture of Finley on the front of your birth certificate. The look of the hospital has really changed.  I also had my daughter here.  I think Finley is a great hospital.

What is your most memorable volunteer experience at Finley?

Recently Finley added the Heart and Vascular Center and a patient became disoriented.  She had been here before the new wing, and was frustrated.  I escorted to the new center on the 3rd floor.  She spoke of the fact she felt inadequate not being able to find her way.  I assured her that she made the right choice with Finley and I made her as comfortable as possible.  She returned to the front entrance and thanked me.  She was very grateful, and I was happy to help.  Interacting with patients is very rewarding.

What do you find most rewarding about your volunteer assignment?

Interacting with the patients, family members, staff and other volunteers.

Who or what motivates you to volunteer?

I am self- motivated.  I want to give back to the community. I had a life changing event in my 30’s, and decided to return to college.  Once I make up my mind to do something, I always do it.

What do you do outside of volunteering at Finley (career, hobbies, interests, etc?)

Outside of volunteering, I enjoy my ten grandchildren.  I have six granddaughters and four grandsons.  Jim and I also love boating, golfing, and motorcycle riding.
