While you are busy being there for those you love, it can be easy to forget to take care of yourself.

That’s where UnityPoint Health – Dubuque comes in. We want to remind you how much you matter to this world by helping you continue to be amazing in all your roles – as a husband, father, brother, partner, son, and friend.

This Men’s Health Awareness Month, take the time to schedule those doctor’s appointments you’ve been putting off, forward this to the men in your life, and keep in mind these services we offer to be with you every step of the way.

Primary Care

Your primary care provider is your secret weapon for wellness. As your partner in health, a primary care provider knows your medical history and can track health changes over time – catching and treating issues like high cholesterol or high blood pressure early. Don’t have a PCP yet? Find a doctor here. Plus you can request an appointment online.

Cancer Screenings

One of the most important aspects of long-term wellness is prevention and early detection. Be sure to keep up with your cancer screenings, including:

Colon Cancer: It’s recommended to start colon cancer screenings at age 45 and with a colonoscopy or a stool-based test. Talk to your primary care doctor about which is the best option for you.
Prostate Cancer: Generally, men between ages 40-55 should begin receiving prostate cancer screenings through a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test. Family history is important, and men with a positive history should be screened earlier. Talk about the risks/benefits of PSA screening with your primary care provider.
Skin Cancer: Watch for any new or changing moles or unusual growths on your skin. If you notice anything suspicious, don’t wait – make an appointment with your primary care provider to get it checked out.

Urgent Care

Whether it’s taking care of your parents, partner, or children, there’s always someone who needs you. UnityPoint Clinic urgent care locations offer personalized care with an emphasis on convenience for your family’s health needs. Plus, with our new Reserve Your Spot tool, you can spend less time in the waiting room by planning your visit around your schedule.

Emergency Care

UnityPoint Health – Dubuque is here for you when it matters most. Our emergency department is open 24/7, 365 days a year. This is your go-to place when you need expert, high quality care – fast.

Finley Hospital is designated as a Primary Stroke Center by the Joint Commission, meaning our quality of care meets the unique and specialized needs of stroke patients. We also have a door-to-balloon time that exceeds the American Heart Association’s recommendation of 90 minutes – often performing angioplasty in less than 60 minutes after a patient’s arrival at the hospital.

When it comes to both strokes and heart attacks, time is of the utmost importance. Don’t ignore these heart attack symptoms or stroke symptoms – call 911 or get to the emergency department right away.

Heart Scan

Check in on your heart health with a heart scan at UnityPoint Clinic Cardiology. Finley Hospital's Heart Scan, also known as Cardiac CT for Calcium Scoring, can detect coronary artery disease (CAD) at an early stage when symptoms may not be present.

The scan can detect the amount of calcium in the arteries of the heart, which is directly related to your risk for heart disease. The Heart Scan is fast, painless and non-invasive. The entire exam takes less than 30 minutes. The results provide you with a calcium score, which can be used to guide lifestyle changes and health improvements.

To schedule a heart scan within the Radiology department at UnityPoint Health – Finley Hospital, please call (563) 557-2787.

Mental Health

It’s OK not to be OK. Mental health counseling can cover anything from anxiety, stress, phobias, depression, ADHD, and more. If you are interested in counseling services, please talk with your primary care provider about what's best for you.

Vasectomy

Vasectomy allows men to take an active role in family planning. The best way to talk about permanently preventing pregnancy is to communicate with your partner about optimal family size and what makes the most sense for you as a couple.
