Meet Griffin: A Finley Baby

by -

Griffin Grund was born on October 30, 2020 at UnityPoint Health - Finley Hospital.
My name: Katey Grund
My baby's name: Griffin James Grund
Weight/Length: 9 pounds, 8 ounces, 21 inches long
Hometown: Dubuque, IA
Birthdate: October 30, 2020

I cannot say enough good things about the Family Birthing Suites staff from October 29th until the 31st! Lexi and Dr. Witthoeft were AMAZING during the birthing experience. I went in at 7 a.m. to be induced on the 29th and Griffin did not make his appearance until 3:47 a.m. on the 30th. Needless to say, it was a very long day but every employee that my husband and I came in contact with was kind and caring.

One thing that stood out to me was the cooperation and teamwork between the nursing staff. I felt a great deal of trust in my nurses, because I could tell they trusted each other. The staff was not afraid to ask each other for help or suggestions (in trying to keep labor progressing).

Griffin was taken from our room on the morning of 10/31 for his circumcision, however a few moments later, Rylea came in holding Griffin, along with nursing staff and housekeeping members to sing me Happy Birthday, as it happened to be my birthday that day. Heidi present me with a Halloween-themed cupcake, and I could see the smiles behind all of their masks as they sang to me.

After a two-night stay and the opening kickoff for the Hawkeye football season fast approaching, I couldn't wait to get out of the hospital and get home. However, there was a weird feeling when leaving the Family Birthing Suites. My first stay was 6 days with my son Tyler and now 2 days with Griffin. Both of my hospital stays, the staff made me feel like part of a Finley family. As happy I as I was to leave, there was an overwhelming feeling of gratitude and appreciation for the people employed on that floor, especially during these times with COVID and all of the added pressure the entire hospital staff feels.

I am grateful for the staff and told Dr. Witthoeft that her nose may itch randomly over the course of the next 10-20 years, as I will continue to tell people how great she was during this experience. Her knowledge, bedside manner and execution to get this 9.5 pound baby out without any complications, sutures or worry was incredible.

My husband and I have no plans to add to our family, but I would recommend to any expecting mother if they have a choice, to choose Finley Hospital.
